Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, William Wordsworth, even Aristotle. What do all of these great minds have in common? They were all avid walkers!
Walking is so underrated! We all know the saying an active body is an active mind but it is so true!
In this article by INC.com, they scratch the surface on why walking helps with our creativity and focus. Here are some of the main points:
Exercise and brain activity
The connection between the rhythm of our feet and our brain

Parker’s Breakdown: The natural productivity drug 🧐
Have you ever seen those people that just seem to get so much done in a day?
It’s like they 48 hours in a 24 hour day! How do they do it? What’s the secret?
The secret really is some basic stuff. After studying multiple successful people, there seems to be a common theme among a lot of them. They combine fasting, caffeine, and physical activity to become a productivity and creativity machine!
Jack Dorsey (former CEO of twitter) says he walks an hour and fifteen minutes everyday to work and only eats one meal a day, Dan Koe (professional writer) says he walks 20k steps in a day, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg made their first meetings of the morning “On the move” to promote brain activity!
So how does this all work?
First, walking has multiple benefits on the brain: 🚶♂️
It promotes blood flow to the brain
Promotes new connection to brain cells
Increases levels of chemicals that promote the growth of new neurons and ease communication between them
Delays the usual aging-related degradation of brain tissue
Enlarges the hippocampus—a region of the brain crucial to memory
Second, fasting has its own benefits as well: 🥩❌
Increase ketone production - Ketones can provide a more efficient and stable fuel for the brain compared to glucose
Reduces oxidative stress
Autophagy activation - a cellular process that removes damaged or dysfunctional components within cells
Fasting can elevate levels of BDNF, a neurotrophic factor linked to the growth, survival, and maintenance of neurons.
Fasting improves mitochondrial function, the energy-producing organelles within cells.
Lastly, the great effects of caffeine on the brain: ☕️
Blocks adenosine - a chemical that tells our brain to relax
Increases dopamine production
Caffeine increases the levels of other neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin - these neurotransmitters play roles in arousal, attention, and mood regulation
Small amounts and adrenaline and cortisol for alertness and focus
Enhances our mood
So now that is obvious that this is a super power, how can we implement these into our lives to maximize our productivity?
First, fasting is the easy part, simply just don’t eat! Now some people go extreme and only eat one meal a day like Jack Dorsey. I just prefer to skip breakfast and eat lunch at around 12 to 1 pm. So I set all my big task for that fasted window!
Next, caffeine. This step is also pretty easy. My only recommendation with this is don’t go too crazy. I personally limit myself to 2 cups of coffee because I feel more sensitive to it on a empty stomach.
Lastly, walking/physical activity. This is the hardest one to do if you have a job inside. But here are some ways I do this at my job.
Start taking meetings and calls outside while walking around
Bust out some pushups or jumping jacks every 30 minutes or so in your office
Or get some work done while walking on a lunch break and then just eat your lunch while working afterwards.
Combining these 3 have skyrocketed my focus, creativity, and productivity and I definitely recommend trying these out all together in your work!
