In recent years, fish oil has garnered significant attention for its potential health benefits. Derived from the tissues of oily fish like mackerel, salmon, and sardines, fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These essential fatty acids play crucial roles in various bodily functions.

The human body is incapable of producing omega-3 fatty acids on its own, necessitating their intake through dietary sources like fish oil. Once consumed, the body metabolizes EPA and DHA, incorporating them into cell membranes throughout the body, particularly in the brain and eyes.

Omega-3 fatty acids serve as precursors to potent signaling molecules known as eicosanoids, which regulate inflammation, blood clotting, and immune response. By modulating these processes, fish oil contributes to a range of physiological functions, from cardiovascular health to cognitive function.

  1. Heart Health: Numerous studies have demonstrated the cardiovascular benefits of fish oil. EPA and DHA help lower triglyceride levels, reduce blood pressure, and prevent arterial plaque formation, thereby decreasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

  2. Brain Function: DHA, in particular, is a major component of brain tissue and plays a crucial role in cognitive function. Regular consumption of fish oil has been associated with improved memory, concentration, and mood, making it a valuable supplement for maintaining brain health, especially as one ages.

The Study 📖 

This meta-analysis aimed to assess the clinical benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) supplementation in preventing and treating coronary heart disease (CHD), focusing on specific subgroups. Fourteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 135,291 subjects were included.

Results showed that omega-3 FA supplementation:

  1. Reduced the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), cardiovascular death, and myocardial infarction (MI), but had no significant effect on all-cause death, stroke, and revascularization.

  2. Subgroup analysis revealed that omega-3 FA supplementation was particularly effective in reducing MACE and cardiovascular death in acute patients with MI, and the risk of MI and stroke in patients with CHD.

  3. Omega-3 FA supplementation at doses of 0.8–1.2 g was associated with reduced risk of MACE, cardiovascular death, and MI.

  4. Gender and diabetes did not significantly affect the association between omega-3 FA supplementation and MACE risk.

In conclusion, omega-3 FA supplementation demonstrated positive effects in reducing the incidence of MACE, cardiovascular death, and MI across different stages of CHD. Doses of 0.8–1.2 g were found to be most effective in alleviating CHD risk. These findings suggest that omega-3 FA supplementation can be a beneficial adjunct in the prevention and management of CHD.
