People tend to think our thoughts are autonomous, and we don’t have any control over what pops in our head. This is false, and we actually have complete control over how we think!
In this article by Jamesclear.com, James discusses how “Priming” can actually change how we think and how we act. Here are a couple of the main points. 👇👇
Oswald Nuckols uses a strategy called "resetting the room" to make future habits easier.
Practical applications for priming your room.
Increasing friction for bad habits, and decreasing friction for good habits.
Whenever you organize a space for its intended purpose, you are priming it to make the next action easy. This is one of the most practical and simple ways to improve your habits.
Parker’s Breakdown: Priming 🔑
In our daily busy lives, it can often feel like we have zero control over our thoughts, but that is completely wrong. We actually have complete control over our thoughts and there are a couple of techniques to control them. One of the techniques that is easy yet powerful is called priming.
Priming is the process of preparing or setting the stage for a particular response. Your environment plays a significant role in shaping your thoughts and behaviors. By intentionally organizing and arranging your surroundings, you can create cues that promote desired actions. This is where the power of priming comes into play.
One of the most practical applications of priming your environment is in forming and maintaining positive habits. For example, if you want to develop a habit of reading more, you can prime your environment by placing books in prominent locations around your home or workspace. Seeing these books regularly serves as a reminder and encouragement to engage in the desired behavior.
Primed environments can also enhance productivity by reducing friction and making tasks easier to accomplish. Whether it's laying out your workout clothes the night before or organizing your workspace for maximum efficiency, small adjustments can have a big impact on your ability to focus and get things done. Making the environment as easy as possible to start working will promote productivity.
Priming can also reduce your bad habits. For example, if you want to read more but always find yourself watching tv, simply prime your environment by moving the tv remote to somewhere far away in the house. Or even go as far as to move the tv into the attic. This creates friction for the bad habit, and if your environment is set up correctly, there should be little to no friction to the good habit, pushing your brain to go for the easy item (the good habit) and avoid doing the hard item (the bad habit).
Start to use priming in your daily life to increase your productivity, reduce your bad habits, and promote the good ones. Simple changes can take you so far!
The Study 📖
In the experiment, elderly participants were taken to a retreat that had been specially designed to recreate the atmosphere of 20 years earlier. The environment was meticulously crafted to transport the participants back in time, with elements such as news broadcasts, discussions, and decor from that era. The participants were instructed to fully immerse themselves in this setting, living as if they were their younger selves from that specific time period, engaging in activities and conversations that would have been typical for them at that age.
Here’s what they found:
The participants exhibited significant physical improvements, including enhanced strength, dexterity, posture, gait, vision, and hearing.
They also demonstrated notable psychological and cognitive improvements, such as better memory, increased intelligence, more positive self-perception and self-image, and heightened engagement.
Independent observers even judged the participants' overall appearance to be more youthful.
This experiment highlighted the profound influence that mental attitudes, environmental cues, and one's perception of their own age and abilities can have on physical health outcomes and the aging process. This shows the power of environment and perception have on our thoughts.
