Many of us have thoughts of self doubt and negativity throughout our day without even noticing it. We hold ourselves back just because of the pattern of our thoughts!

What if we started to have a different pattern of thoughts? What if we had positive, self empowering thoughts, even when we messed up. What could we accomplish?

In this article by Golfmonthly.com, they discuss changing our thought patterns through an example of star golfer Wyndham Clark and his sport psychologist Julie Elion. Here are a couple of the main points. 👇👇

  • Wyndham Clark won his first Major championship and first Tour win in 2023

  • Prior to these victories, Clark's best finish in a Major was tied for 75th at the 2021 PGA Championship.

  • Clark attributed his success to his work with psychologist and performance coach Julie Elion, highlighted in Netflix's Full Swing series.

  • Clark struggled with self-belittlement, negative thinking, and coping with the loss of his mother in 2013.

  • Elion helped Clark break these negative cycles, bringing calmness and relaxation to his approach.

When you get in that pattern of negativity and 'I stink, I suck, I’ll never make a cut again' - all the things that I heard - it’s hard to climb out of it.

Parker’s Breakdown: Thought Patterns 🔑

Subconsciously negative self-talk can profoundly limit our performance and the risks we're willing to take. This self-sabotaging mindset convinces us that we can't achieve our goals, diminishing our potential and holding us back from opportunities. Changing this internal dialogue is crucial for unlocking our capabilities and fostering the confidence needed to take risks.

A compelling example of this transformation is Wyndham Clark, the unheralded golfer who won the 2023 US Open. Clark had been trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and negative thinking, exacerbated by personal struggles, including the loss of his mother. His breakthrough came through working with psychologist Julie Elion, who helped him shift his mindset. With Elion's guidance, Clark learned to replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations, fostering a calm and confident approach to his game.

Clark’s journey illustrates the profound impact of believing in oneself. Before his mental transformation, his best finish in a Major was a tie for 75th. However, with newfound self-belief, he not only claimed his first Major championship but also made his Ryder Cup debut. This story underscores the immense potential within us all: when we change our negative self-talk, we open doors to achievements we once thought impossible. Believing in ourselves empowers us to take the risks necessary for success.

The Study 📖

This study investigated the impact of implementing positive psychology concepts and individual positive traits like optimism, well-being, and personal strength on employees' performance and organizational productivity. The researchers proposed a framework that illustrated the relationships between these positive traits, employees' performance, organizational policies, and organizational productivity. Based on this framework, hypotheses were formulated, and a survey was conducted on employees in a selected organization to test these hypotheses.

The methodology involved designing a questionnaire with around ten questions per hypothesis on average. The questionnaire was administered online to employees, ensuring confidentiality. The data was then analyzed using the z-test, where agree/disagree responses were considered, and neutral responses were ignored. The percentages of agree and disagree responses were calculated for each hypothesis, and the mean, standard deviation, and z-scores were computed.

Here’s what the study found:

  • Building organizational policies based on positive psychology concepts increases employees' performance and overall productivity.

  • Individual positive traits such as optimism, well-being, and personal strength lead to more focused employees with better performance and organizational productivity.

  • All hypotheses regarding the positive impact of these traits on employees' performance and organizational productivity were accepted based on the statistical analysis.
